Notarial records are accessible to the general public. Copies and certifications are available for a fee. Current records are housed in open stacks at 1340 Poydras Street, Suite 500, New Orleans, LA. Notarial Archives Division clerks will assist the public in retrieving records.
Records created after July 29, 1970, are retrieved by their NA (Notarial Archives) number. NA numbers are clearly marked on the spines of the record books. Land transfers and some other record types are indexed by the Conveyance Division. Encumbrances on property are indexed by the Mortgage Division.
Records created prior to August 1970, are retrieved by the name of the notary and the date of the act. If researchers do not have the NA number (after July 1970) or the notarys name and date (before August 1970), they may consult the Conveyance Division's electronic and paper indexes. Notary names and dates appear on the spines of the record books. Annual indexes are also bound into the volumes.
Some pre-1970 notary records are bound in various notaries volumes that date back to 1902.
Historical records dating back to 1735 are located in the Research Center & Historical Documents, located at 1340 Poydras Street, Suite 360.
